Massena Spa is known as Massena Springs, an area of the village of Massena. At the time in history that you are referring to, Massena Springs was a resort area known for it's mineral springs and many people travelled there for it's "cures". Among the visitors was John L. Sullivan, the heavyweight champion of the world at that time.
