My local library has a subscription to Heritage Quest online and the 1860 census is indexed. I searched for James O'brien in St. Lawrence county and found a census image for James, age 61, from Ireland, in Gouverneur. Wife Elinor, age 45 from Ireland. Children James, 11, Elizabeth 8, Michael 7, Martha 4 all born NY and John age 21 born Ireland. There is no occupation listed for James or John.

In Heritage Quest you can 'search' indexed censuses or 'browse' censuses that are not indexed. The 1850 census is not indexed.

Ancestry.com has similar indexed census images on line and many local libraries have subscriptions to the service. If you have a valid library card and your library has a website, you might want to try either service (or get your own paid subscription)
