Sounds like I am getting in the middle of some existing correspondence,
but here is your James J. SMITH family
from the 1870 Census--

1870 US Census, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co., NY
SMITH, James J, age 25, Farmer, b NY
SMITH, Elizabeth, age 29 Keeping House, born Canada, Father & Mother of
foreign birth
SMITH, William, age 5, b NY
SMITH, Cora, age 2, b NY

There are two other SMITH families on the same census page who may be
related to your family--
SMITH, Levi 30, wife Lovisa J, 38, child Wm H. age 4, all born NY
and
SMITH, Harvey 54, wife Lucy N 49, children Mary J 13, George W 9--all
born NY
