Thomas Hamilton died in 1879 in Ashville, Chatauqua County NY. An obit from the Jamestown Journal provided the basis for the information I gave you on his place of origin, ie Ogdensburg NY. In some of the NY census returns he is listed as being born in St Lawrence County Vermont. None of the family's surviving documents give us any details of his family or history prior to his arrival in Blockville NY in 1845. Family oral history asserts he was a sailor/carpenter on the Great Lakes and named his 3 sons after ships he worked on - Hendrick H, Henry Harrison and Hosea Orlando Hamilton.
He married a local girl (Sallyette Carpenter)in 1846 but her family had come to the area from Dutchess County NY a generation earlier as part of the first settlers c.1814. The Obit claimed he served as sailor, mate and master before settling down.

If you or anyone else reading these posts can point to any potential avenues of research re Thomas and his family besides those in your email I would appreciate the help, eg How many Hamilton families moved from Vermont and when?

Many thanks for your prompt reply to my earlier post.
