Teri,
I found this family on the 1930 census:

Village of Ridgewood, Bergen County NJ #446 Alpine Terrace:

Leroy V. Altz, age 28, married at 19, born NY, both parents NY
Mary D. wife, age 28, married at 19, born NY, father Irish Free State, mother NY
Leroy V. Jr. son, age 7, born NY
Jean M. daughter, age 3 years, 9 months [census visit was April 8, 1930], born NY
Martin J. Downs, father-in-law, age 57, married at 26, born Irish Free State, both parents Irish Free State
Mary C. Downs, mother-in-law, age 55, married at 24, born NY, both parents, Irish Free State

Leroy was a stockbroker. Martin J. immigrated in 1886 and was a naturalized citizen.

Going back to the 1920 census, we find Martin Downs in Brooklyn, NY living at #1610 10th Avenue:

Martin J. Downs, age 47, born Ireland, both parents Ireland
Mary C, wife, age 45, born NY, both parents Ireland
Esther C. daughter, age 20, born NY
Mary E. daughter, age 19, born NY
William M. son, age 17, born NY

Martin was a City Detective.

Also in 1920 in Brooklyn, living at #507 Park Place:

Amos Altz, age 41, born NY, father U.S. mother Germany
Jane, wife, age 39, born Ny, both parents NY
Leroy, son, age 19, born NY
Mildred, daughter, age 17, born NY

I'm goind to post this much now and look in the 1880 for Amos' parents and will let you know if I find them.
Hope this helps fill in some blanks.
