Remember when we used to get the lid of a screw top jar - made a hole in the
middle and put a long piece of string through it, knotted it and ran along
the street with it rolling along. It was amazing how far we could get with
it before it it flipped over.

Subject: Amusement in the 1950's
Back in the 1950's before we had Television us kids used to play marbles and
knuckle bones, i remember i was a whizz at winning the other kids marbles of
them when we played for keeps. We used to get cards with our bubblegum so we
would swap them with other kids when we had duplicates. Leslie my brother
who is no longer with us used to make grader things using a wooden cotton
reel and a peice of candle and a rubber band and a peice of matchstick, we
would wind these up with the match and set them going on the table or wooden
floor and see who's would win the race. Leslie also used to make shangai's
or slingshots and we would get the plums of the ground and see who could
shoot the furtherest, mine always seem to drop at my feet, they were rather
a dangerous contraption as i remember one of the neighbours kids aiming his
shangai at me and it had a small stone in it and it hit me on the ankle it
was very painful. Growing up in the country just out of Te Aroha we also
used to go!
tadpoling in the farmers cow troughs and bird nesting for eggs in the
hedges, makes me shudder today. We also used to make bows and arrows and
play cowboys and indians with all the kids in the neighbourhood in the
school holidays. If only we knew it they were some of the best days of our
lives.
