Now 6C in Auckland according to my Google desktop gadget. <brrr!>
(Haven't worked out how to make it show more than one location at a time
yet!) Have finally warmed up, but my toes are still cold - they'll
probably stay that way until I have dinner, or until the beer that I'm
slowly consuming reaches them. :-)
I'm running a stall - and managing the entire market - for a friend who
has gone to be with her dying father. Her stall sells organic dry
goods, and cheeses. It's the largest stall at the market, covering five
tables at the moment (usually more, but we cut the stock back for the
duration of my friend's absence to make the workload a little easier on me).
The stock comes from the Kaiwaka Cheese Shop
(http://www.cheese-shop.co.nz/), which my friend owns and runs with her
husband.
The "dry" goods include flour, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, oils,
vinegars, canned goods, grains, beverages, snacks, pasta, eggs,
condiments... And the cheeses are a small selection of what is carried
at the shop, usually an aged Gouda, Maasdam, goat, edam, edam with cumin
seeds, brie, haloumi feta, a selection of blue cheeses, and more.
I've just started putting a photo album together on Facebook, if anyone
is interested - see
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=31143&l=7f331&id=644567880 Just
at this moment there is only a couple of photos of how I set the stall
up a couple of weeks ago, but I will add more soon.
Also at the market today was the regular cafe (wonderful food, we're
having some of his French Onion soup for dinner tonight), Rush Coffee
(locally roasted coffee, very good and very popular), honey, baking,
handmade soaps and toiletries, locally-grown macadamia nuts, handmade
woodwork, imported jeans, flowers & herbs, and a few stalls selling
pre-loved goods (I scored a whistling kettle from one, to use on the gas
stove when the power goes out). Outside, braving the weather (though I
suspect they spent more time inside than out!) was three stalls selling
a variety of plants. Other regulars who weren't there today include a
local winery and bush medicine products, and in summer we have more
stalls outside, selling all sorts of things, from clothes to jewellery,
and we have locally grown veges and fruit whenever we can source it (not
as easy as it sounds!).
Despite the weather, I had a reasonable day today. Lots of new
visitors, who are probably visiting the area for the school holidays, as
well as lots of local regulars. With the cafe in the market, many stop
to have a coffee and a chat while they're here. Several, like me, are
loyal to their suppliers at the market and come here to get their goods
before going elsewhere. :-)
Had a great day despite the cold and wet, but am very glad to be home
now! :-)
Wendy
