newspaper_article: James Mell was born in Allen county, Ohio, April 18, 1841
and died at his late home, 140 East Pearl street, Dec. 26th, 1899, aged 58
years, 8 months, and 12 days.
Brother Mell was united in marriage to Levina S. Shearer, November 16th,
1865, and three children blessed their union, his eldest daughter, Jettie,
having preceded him to the better land. Brother Mell leaves a wife, a son and
a daughter and one granddaughter, three brothers and many other friends to
mourn their loss.
Brother Mell, with his wife, joined the Christian Church at West Cairo
under the labors of Elder Martz and lived devoted to this church till his
death. he was a great sufferer from a complication of diseases contracted
while in the line of duty in the service of his country from '61 to '65, but
he endured all patiently and with that Christian fortitude that characterized
the children of God. He died trusting in the God he served.
Brother Mell was a quiet, peaceable neighbor, a loving husband and kind
father. His funeral was held at the United Brethren Church, the services
being conducted by Elder D. Lobangh, assisted by the Rev. L. C. Reed, a large
and sympathizing congregation being present, including the G.A.R., of which
he was a worthy member.
