Hmmmm. I am trying to figure out what is happening for you.

I went to the sign in page, typed in a phony sign in, and it stayed on the
sign in page with a message "User not found".

Then I did my normal sign in and it took me to the home page. It looks a
little like the following at the top:

{pic. of} FAMILYSEARCH LABS HOME (other stuff) Sign Out
{ tree } RECORD SEARCH WELCOME: "user name"

Can you describe what the top of your page looks like after you sign in?
