Thelma Irene was born March 19, 1914 in Azle, TX to Robert L. and Clara Phillips, and died Monday, July 2, 2007 in Oklahoma City. On August 18, 1931 she married William L. They did take a temporary break during WWII and worked at Tinker Field building airplanes. She worked in the tool crib there. After the war they returned to the restaurant until they sold it in the 1960's. She then went to work for the Oklahoma City School district until she retired in 1984 at age 70. Thelma was active in the Amaranth and Order of the Eastern Star. In Amaranth she was a member of the Queen Christina Count and was a Past Grand Royal Matron for the State of Oklahoma. In Eastern Star, she was a member of Fidelis Oklahoma Chapter #426 and was a Past Worthy Matron. She was in both organizations over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Whitson; parents, Robert and Clara Phillips; sister, Mildred Nix; 2 brothers, Otho and James L. Phillips and a nephew James Nix. Her survivors are nieces, Michaelene Sorber of Gilmer, TX and Gretchen Hamm of Dallas, TX; nephew, Fletcher Phillips of Fort Worth, TX and several great and great-great nephews; and a sisterin-law. Services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, July 6 at Guardian West Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Reverend William Moody.
