Weldon Thomas Heard
The Lord took Weldon Thomas Heard, 86, to his heavenly home on Saturday, July 26, 2008, with his family at his side. Weldon was born in Lake City, California, on January 14, 1922, and grew up in Ashland, Oregon. Weldon, known to his friends as 'Doc', was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. 'Doc' received his Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado A & M in 1950, and practiced at his own clinic in Colorado for 23 years. The family moved to Lookingglass, Oregon in 1973, where 'Doc' practiced part-time for seven years at Bailey Veterinary Clinic in Roseburg, Oregon. He was an animal breeder and fancier, being well known for the breeding of Australian Shepherd dogs and Suffolk sheep. His motto, “A few fine ones,” will live on through all the bloodlines he worked to improve. He wrote several books on family history and some of the humorous exploits from his years as a veterinarian. He was a member of the Lookingglass Community Church for many years.
In all these endeavors, he had a passion for finding ways to introduce people to the Lord. He and Sue used this God given talent in church youth groups, bible study groups, and in many one-on-one relationships where they taught, by example, the way to walk with the Lord. They mentored many young people, even taking some into their home and family for extended periods. 'Doc's' sense of humor was legendary, and no one was exempt from his pranks. Weldon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Sue of Roseburg; daughters, Janelle Ward and her husband, Dave and Brooks Temple and her husband, Jim, all of Colorado; son, Rex Heard and his wife, Kelly, of Roseburg; son-in-law, Ron Hanson of Salem, Oregon; nine grandchildren and six (nearly seven) great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Lynn, and brother Wayne. Friends may pay their respects on Friday Morning, August 1, 2008, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Taylor’s Family Chapel.
Private graveside services will be held Friday August 1, 2008, at Lookingglass Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 1, 2008, at 6 p.m. in the sheep pasture at the home of Rex and Kelly Heard, 2116 Dairy Loop Road in Lookingglass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mercy Hospital Hospice 2700 Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, OR. 97471.
