Thanks Martha for responding!

Wasco County was the parent/grandparent county for most of eastern OR and
actually included parts of ID, MT, and a piece of WY (per the info on line)!
So I am 99.9% sure I am in the correct county. (But I have had the same
situation as you describe in OH)

I don't know how you would buy the house without buying the property. And
it might have been "buying" in words only since the house was being lived in
by his father-in-law, DeForrest "Forrest" Stanbro. Does anyone have any
wild guesses, or knowledge, about this?

I don't know if Stanbro ever started the paperwork for a claim, but no one
owned the property prior to Olmstead filing for it or there would not be a
BLM file for it. If anyone knows where to look for such paperwork (starting
a claim but not finishing it), I would appreciate hearing from you.

Olmstead's file at the National Archives shows that he originally hoped to
purchase 160 acres, but couldn't get enough money to do so; he "abandoned"
his application for 80 acres and paid for 80.

I haven't heard of houses being moved from one property to another in the
1870's and 1880's, but I suppose anything is potentially possible. I'll
keep that possibility in mind.
