Subject: [OSBORNE] burial custom????
Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 07:37:58 -0700 (PDT)
My grandmother was Vada Belle OSBORNE SIDDENS b. 1882 on Fiddlers'
Ridge, Union Twp., Effingham Ct. Il., father was Francis Marion son of
Levi OSBORNE b. 1837 in Madison Ct. Ohio. On the question. My
grandmother and others would place sea shells or muscle shells on the
graves. I had forgotten this practice until my mother (age 82) reminded
me. Does any one know where this custom stems from, and what does it
mean? I have heard an am. indian custom that provides smooth sailing
HOME and have heard it was European. My g randmother , it was rumored,
was part indian. Her families came from Virginia, to Ohio, to Tennessee
and Ky. to the hills of Fiddlers' Ridge in Illinois, she still
practiced some of the customs of her people. Curious? I am. I am also
going to put some shells on my grandmothers' grave and her ancestors
graves in the Osborne Cemetary on the Ridge, Thanks Cuzzins'
