Subject: [OSHAUGHNESSY] Virginia Freedmen Project

An accouncment in this morning's Columbus Distpatch may be of interest to
some of our list members. It says that The Virginia Freedmen Project plans
to digitize more than 200,000 images collected by the Richmond Freedmen's
bureau. The Freedmen bureau offices were established throughout the American
south to help former slaves adjust to free life. Virginia Governor, Timothy
Kaine, is quoted as comparing the digitization of these records as "the
equivalent for Afican-Americans of Ellis Island's records being put up". The
Gealogical Society of Utah is noted as a partner in the project. Apparently
the records are expected to go on-line by mid 2007.
