Tenterhooks are the hooks or bent nails used to stretch a piece of cloth.
According to the shorter OED the figurative use dates from 1532!
The tenter itself was a frame used to stretch woollen cloth so that it
wouldnt distort.
Anyway, "respect" for using the proper version and not the degenerate
'tenderhooks'!!
