Tom-
This very interesting. It is the best I have seen so far although obviously
there is a ways to go. I believe the draw for them to Pittsburgh was like
many others the steel industry and al the peripheral opportunities but I am
not certain of that. The iron industry was dieing in Merthyr about the time
the family came to the US after a couple rogue efforts at relocating in
England.
The naming patterns along with the destination support your thoughts so I am
definitely interested in exploring this further. Have you had any luck going
back further? Unfortunately, I have learned that most of the boat logs were
lost in a fire but I was being hopeful.
John & Mary formerly Scannel/ Scanlon settled in the Lawrenceville section
of Pittsburgh Mulberry Alley to be specific.
Please stay in touch.

Welcome John,
There is bound to be someone in the list who can help you. Mine are Scanlon
with my great grandmother Ellen Ferry purportedly coming from Glasgow,
Scotland
with her family into eastern Penn. and spending some time in a Quaker colony
before moving west. She married my great grandfather Cornelius Scanlon in
Davenport, Iowa. She was living there with an older sister who
owned/ran/worked
in a hotel.
Good luck in your search.

John Steitz <> wrote: I am new to the site and my first
question is about the last name. Every
record I have found Marriage and children Birth certificate lists a Mary
SCANNELL. The Pittsburgh RC Diocese also lists a Mary SCANNELL. However the
family insists the spelling to be SCANLON. My belief is what I read in the
records. However, it is possible that these folk were difficult to
understand for the census takers that the error was not recified until much
later. On all certificates the signatures were "X" . Looking at the Irish
Times site it appears that the roots be the same anyhow. Translation would
differ by geographics so to speak. Could someone share their experience on
this subject. The folk in Wales basically have told me to study both
spellings plus a few other oddball SCANLAN, SCANNOL etc.
My Mary SCANNELL, as I know her, was born about 1834 in Ireland. There has
not been a county or parish reference to date. She married a John BUCKLEY
also born in Ireland on May 18, 1852 at St Illtyd's RC Church in Dowlais,
Glamorgan County, Wales. Her father was listed as Edward Scannell (Deceased)
on certificate. Their children were named Johanna, Edward, Margaret, Ellen,
Bridget, John, Catherine, Cornelius & Jeremiah. John, Mary & the children
moved to Pittsburgh, PA. by 1873 where the last 2 of the children were born.
This date in 1852 is the first recorded evidence of Mary in Wales or England
as she has not been found on 1851 Census rolls. She could have lived as an
unofficial border somewhere under the radar as this was such a tumultuous
time.
I have reason to believe that John BUCKLEY hails from Inchigeelagh Parish,
County Cork but this is not for certain. There is an Edward Scannell in
Inchigeelagh Parish on 1827 Tithe rolls. I have no evidence of a birth to
match my Mary and do not believe that to be a match. Because this couple
could not read or write, I would not be alarmed to find that Edward is
actually Edmund or something similar.
If anyone could lend me some information about the SCANNELL and SCANLON
families and spelling I would be very appreciative. And on a further stretch
if anyone could match this Mary SCANNELL or SCANLON to their family findings
I would be excited to hear from you.
Thanks for taking the time.
John
