Hi Laurie!
I have only been in this group for a short while as I have recently
discovered that my great-great grandfather was born in Elmshorn,
Schleswig-Holstein 4 Nov 1864. His name was Peter Frederick (Terdnau?)
SCHROEDER. From what I have been told, he stowed away on a boat to the
United States as a young man, and then later went back because he was
worried about his mother (name unknown). Evidently, he again stowed away
to America after she died. Peter then married Melvina (Mellie) HENRY, and
they had two children: Mearl Thomas SCHRODER and Anna (Ana) Marie
SCHROEDER, both born in Douglas, Wyoming. You might notice that Mearl's
last name was spelled differently. My understanding is that he had the E
legally dropped when he got older. It appears that Jacob could have been
an uncle to Peter, as the age would be about right. However, I don't know
how common the SCHROEDER name was in the area at that time.
Hope this helps!
