Gladys,
I warned you I would be following up! Here are my elder BECKMAN(N)s:
Wilhelm BECKMANN (b. Germany, unknown date) m. Sophie BARSCH. Wm and
Sophie had the following children:
Julia Augusta BECKMAN (b. 30 July 1847 in Brandenburg, Germany)
Marie Emilia BECKMAN (b. 20 January 1849 in Nemwedel Province,
Brandenburg, Germany)
Reports from family members have it that there was a third sister,
whose identity I have not yet determined (I think someone has it though).
There may have been other children as well.
These three sisters married three brothers from the neighboring WALTER
family(ies). My ggrandfather, Hans Frederick WALTER {Jr.} (b. 25 Feb. 1846
in Schleswig, Germany) married Julia Augusta on 23 April 1871 in Chicago.
His brother, John (Johan) H. WALTER (birthdate unknown) married Marie
Amilia, also in 1871 (specific date unknown). John died in 1889, and Marie
remarried in 1896 to John SCHEITTER. (The marriage certificate from this
marriage gave Julia's birthplace and listed their parent's names).
A Heinrich WALTER is listed as a sponsor on the baptismal certificate
of George Hans WALTER, one of Hans and Julia's children, along with Wilhelm
and Louis Beckmann. I am speculating that this was the baby's uncle and
the third brother that is to have married the third BECKMAN sister.
Wilhelm could have been Julia's father, or a brother. I haven't found her
in a passenger list, as yet, so cannot be certain whether her father
emigrated with the entire family or not. My guess is that he did, as Julia
would have been only 20-21, and Marie would have only been 18-19 (assuming
they came over together). Though I am not well informed about the culture
and politics of gender in that day, it seems unlikely that a pair of young
ladies like this would be travelling to the US on their own.
Much of this is less than well-documented, as you can tell, though I
am attempting to reach those family members who apparently know more about
it. I do have fairly extensive decendencies of Julia/Hans and Marie/John,
though, which stand on ground a bit firmer. In the meantime, if there is
anything here that appears to make a connection to your own BECKMANNs, or
that you may have additional information about, I'd love to hear about it!

Congrats!
. . .BTW, I have a Julia Augusta Beckmann in Chicago...my ggrandmother. Her
husband (Hans Frederick Walter, Sr.) had 2 brothers who reportedly married
two of Julia's sisters. I have all the info at work, and will follow up
with more details....maybe we have a connection!
