Judith, As a further note my grandfather, his wife and two daughters moved
from Iowa by train to The Dalles, Oregon and then crossed the Columbia. They
had heard of a German settlement at Trout Lake. My grandfather, Martin
Thompson (Thomsen) became Post Master at The Falls of the White Salmon River
and named the Post Office Husum after the town in S-H near the Village of
Hattstedt where he was born. He built a grist mill at the site, and worked
on the Cascade Locks on the Columbia River before moving on the Oregon. He
eventually settled at the site of Boston, Oregon and purchased Boston Mills.
