Johanna asks "Why did my father and his brothers call her Tante all their
and her life?"

There were a few relatives in my S-H family, and some unrelated close
friends of the family, who were called "Tante" and "Onkel" even though they
were not, strictly speaking, aunt and uncles. I recall this to be a custom
of addressing some elders.
