I want to thank everyone who is trying so hard to help me.
I have used the alt ... for years with my old e-mail (juno) and never had a problem. In fact the 'codes' are taped to the front of my monitor, in case I forget. It even works on this (msn) program except for 2 characters - the u umlaut and the y (ij). So I guess my question is, Why do I have difficulty with just those 2? All of the others, both upper and lower case are just fine. It is just the lower case u.
It seems radical to change the whole system because of one letter, but it may come to that.

You can also download a small programme called Umlauta from
http://www.kagi.com/vfstudio/umlaut.htm then when you want to insert a
German character just click on the appropriate one and paste it into your
word. It says on the page that it's for Windows 95/98 but I am using it
successfully with Windows Me.
