Email JohnKostick at and ask to be a member of the Fehmarn website. John has a lot Nissen's in his on-line database.

My brother just told me some new information he'd forgotten until today: Mathaus Nissen came from the Isle of Fehmarn. I'd seen in an obituary for someone else that they'd come from the "Burg of Fermen" which I couldn't find, but now that I went to the Fehmarn website I see that there is a "Burg of Fehmarn". That narrows his family down to one island, but I still can't find any postings about Nissens on that Isle.
Wilhelmina left Ost Preussen for Berlin (we don't know why) and worked on a farm there where they did everything from cooking and cleaning to taking care of crops and animals. My grandmother still says her father's last name was 'Teke' or a alternate spelling of it (Thieke, Tieke, etc.), and when I was looking today at my map of Ost Preussen I found a river called Passarge River there in Ost Preussen. Maybe she took the name 'Passarge' when she immigrated because of that river near her 'home'. I hope someday I find out! Either way, I'll post her information to the correct board now that I know she was definitely not from S-H, but most likely from Landsberg, East Prussia (now known as Gorowo Ilaweckie)--thanks to all the great responses I got from people on this forum.
Thank you to everyone who provided me with information, and if anyone knows anything more on Mathaus or Matthaeus Nissen's family from Fehmarn, I'd love to hear it. I have found the Fehmarn-genealogy.com website and have started looking through their information, but no Nissens have appeared yet.
