First of all, I want to thank everyone who has
helped me with my questions on where to start with my
Christensens. This one looks like it's going to be
tough, but I've got some good leads and let's see
where it goes.
I do have some questions about the history and
culture of the region, though. Is there anyone out
there who could recommend a good history of the area,
either online or in a book?
I'm interested in learning more about the following
topics:
- If the region was held by Denmark until 1864, but
primarily German, were the Danes perceived as an
occupying force?
- Did Danish men from elsewhere in Denmark do
military service in the region? Was that the duty a
man didn't want to be stuck with?
- What was the treatment of ethnic Danes in the
German lands after the war ended? What about those in
"mixed-marriages"?

I know some of these are really specific and
perhaps unknowable questions, but I'm beginning to get
an idea of what happened to make this family so
tight-lipped about its history.
Thanks for any help (again),
Erica
