Hi Carsten,
I am not a descendent of Jacob but found some stuff on
familysearch.com about someone who is probably your Jacob.
There's a Jacob L. Steffen who married an Anna K
Hendrickson in Chicago, Cook Co, Illinois on 20 Aug 1881.
He was 29 and she was 26.
There was a male b. to Jacob Steffens on 02 Apr 1884 and
Catherine Steffens in Chicago, Cook Co. Illinois. This was
the first child born to this couple and they are living at
the corner of Western and Milwaukee Avenues. He is listed
as being b. in Denmark and being Danish. Catherine's
maiden name is Hendrickson. Jacob is listed as a butcher.
There was a daughter b. to this couple on 16 Feb 1887 in
Chicago, Cook Co., Father's nationality was German, b. in
Denmark. Wife is listed as Catheine Stephen with maiden
name of Hendricks. The last name is spelled "Stephen." He
is a "car driver." The family is living at 1068 Western
Ave.
Marene Steffan was b. 13 July 1888 in Chicago, Cook Co.,
IL to Jacob Steffan and Kathrene Hendrickson. Kathrene is
listed as being born in Denmark He is listed as being b.
in Germany. Marene was the 4th child b. to Catherine. He
is listed as a Car driver. They are living at 153 Copatin
or Copalin St. (14th ward.)
There is a Henry Stephen, d. 23 Apr 1924 in Broadview,
Cook Co., IL. He was b. 18 May 1889 in Chicago, IL to
Jacob (Stephen) and Catherine Henrickson. He was an
Electrician for Struch & Co in Chicago. Burial date was 26
Apr 1924 at Eden Cemetery.
There is a Henry Steffens living in the 35th ward of
Chicago in 1920. He is 28 years old and living with a
wife, Mary and son, Henry who is 4 1/2. I don't know if
this your family or not. This Henry is a steel worker in a
factory.
I've checked on census records but with the family's
frequent change in name spelling, its hard to find them.
