Hi
I do have a few Scot Métis marriage in the French Métis tree. Scot Métis
tended to settle in the north part of the Red River settlement and the
French Métis in the South. My main line of Métis is Vermette.
My main Scots line didn't arrive in Manitoba until 1874 Barbour and Crooks
both family lines were from Kilmarnock Scotland. The High School Canadian
history as change now and student are given the Native and Métis point of
view of history. My son's book had a lot more on Native trips and Louis
Riel, then I ever did. I had to search my husband Métis line so he could
get Métis status. He grew as a foster child.

Hi Sheila:
It is true the men of the Nor'west Company had a large number of French
Metis, but it also had a large number of Scots Metis too.
The Hudson Bay Company was granted their charter in May, 1670.
http://victoria.tc.ca/history/etext/hudsons.bay.co.charter.html The HBC
preferred Orcadians (from Orkney) and Shetlanders as laborers because they
were such hard workers who could exist on very little. Also good boatsmen.
History tells much of the struggle between the French and the Engosh which
ended French control in Canada circa 1759.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Plains_of_Abraham
The French paddler or "voyageur" often worked for the Norwest Company (in
competition with the HBC). Feeling the HBC shouldn't be the only one to
make money on the very valuable fur industry. Many "Metis" were half Indian
and Scots. Many of the explorers who worked for the NorWest have Scottish
surnames - http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Atrium/4832/hudson3.html
The HBC forbade intermarriage between the nativres and their men, but many
fur men and explorers found a Native liason to their advantage - giving us
some of the Metis. Marriages were not always formal but known as " country
marriages". Like in today's society, some men were loayal to their countrey
wives and some abandoned them. Of course there are Metis with French
surnames too as they also found Native women very helpful in the fur trade
industry.
The first Selkirk settlers were Scots families and if you look at the
following site, it gives some information on the group. Somewhere have a
list of these settlers, but just can't find it in my "great" filing system -
obviously is rather poor! Will post if it comes to light.

The earlier Manitoba Scot would be on the Métis section of the Canadian
Archives as original settles. I have the Crooks that came to the Niagara
region about 1790. The records are from family bibles. The early Manitobans
were French.

My Scots part of the family were Selkirk settlers to Manitoba and who
trickled into Ontario from there beginning c 1817. Dad's family came into
the Niagara region beginning c 1780ish. I'd hoped to find some immigration
info on the lists but I now think it was too early for Canadian records.
You do a good job with your lists so keep up the good work. Have a great
day,
