Subject: [SD-CENSUS] Gula & Bower 1900 South Dakota Census
Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 08:45:32 -0700

I am searching for Lewis Gula, b. 1843 Germany. His wife Minnie Miller was
located in Day, Clark SD with 2 if their children, Nellie and Leonard.
Lewis is not with them, yet reportedly still living. They originally came
from Troy and Sand Lake, Rensselaer NY around 1882. Maybe earlier but
Minnie was living with her parents and two of her other children, Louise and
John in Troy in the 1880 census. Lewis was among the missing. Son, John
b.1879 can not be located in 1900 in South Dakota either. I find him in
1910 and 1920 in Ash, Clark, SD. Lewis homesteaded land in Brown County in
1882 in a town called Bath. While searching through the online version of
the Brown County Centennial book, I stumbled upon Andrew Bower who is the
son of Lewis's sister Hannah. So although I seem to be in the right place,
I can't locate the actual census entries for Lewis Gula. b 1843 or Andrew
Bower b 1851 and wife Clara Miller b 1861. Andrew and Clara are reportedly
in the Bath Cemetery with Clara's death recorded in 1896, but no date for
Andrew.

John Gula b. 1879 filed land clarims in Oct 1900 in Raymond, Clark SD. He
married in Nov 1900, Elma Woodland. Where was he in June 1900 when the
census was taken? Genealogy.com shows an index to a Joh Gula on their 1900
CD that combines North and South Dakota. Does anyone have that CD?

I have the subcription to ancestry.com and have checked rather painfully the
towns of Bath in Brown County, and Ash, Day, and many others in Clark
County. I just don't have an index.

Any help would be appreciated. Gula is often misspelled as Gooley, Goulah,
Gouley, and even found under Cooley. Thanks for listening.

Sharron
