I've sent this basic information before but I'm hoping a newer audience
might be able to help. Need help with a very confusing Smith family.
Marquis De Lafayette Smith b.9/7/1824 d.10/15/1893 (better known M.D.L.
Smith married Catherine E. Phelps (b.1/30/1828 d.1/1898)in about 1845.
Both were from New York. They migrated to Ohio where they had several
children. One son, Jesse E. Smith born in about 1857 now moved to Kent
County, Michigan married an Ona Adell Hough daughter of Charles and Ethel
Sayles Hough. The couple had two children, Belle Flora b.8/15/1879 and
Harley E. Smith b.12/10/1898. Ona died of pneumonia when Harley was just
a few days old. The children were split up. Harley was adopted out to
Jesse Smith' sister Maella L. Smith and her husband James K. Morris of
Kent County, Michigan. Harley E. Smith grew up and married Mary Johnson
and I believe the family is still in Kent County, MI. as of the 1920s to
1930s. I loose track of him there. I'm looking for someone possibly a
relative who can fill me in from there. Other surnames connected to
this Smith family include: Allen, Anderson, Arnold, Beardsless, Bird,
Cool, Eldred, Haynes, Joslin, Moore, Morris, Moyes, Phelps, Redmond,
Ridgeway, Stamp and Unger. Thank you so much for your help.
