Subject: [SMITH-L] Common--uncommon
Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 12:45:33 EDT
A while back we were discussing common vs uncommon names. I have one of each.
My g-grandmother was Mary SMITH b 9 Apr 1813 Johnston co., NC d 1887 Pulaski
co., AR. I have no other knowledge of her until her first marrage in 1834 to
Sher(r)od HILL in Green co., AL.
The uncommon name is her father Dempsy SMITH -- and that is the only
information I have on him. One less than reliable source described him as "a
well known planter and slaveowner ...". I have been unable to find him in
1810 or 1820 censuses nor in a history of Johnston county.
I have a good bit of info on Mary SMITH HILL WOOD including her 12 children
but would love to find out about her siblings, if any, and parents, etc.
TIA
Lee Wood
