HELP!!!!!

I am searching for the parents of (you guessed it) John W. Smith. John was born in Baltimore, MD on 7/6/1872 and died 3/14/1928. John Married Laura Peacock. He had a brother named Albert born Sept, 1877. According to John's death certificate (I know they are usually wrong) his father was also John and his mother Elizabeth both born in MD. According to census records though John's father was born in South Carolina. With a name like John Smith I don't know where to begin in searching South Carolina.
