Jean,
I've been in touch with several Penningtons, including the Pennington
Research Association, where I placed my Smith tree to be displayed, and
theres not much to go on.
I checked both volumes of Ann Cantrell's book on Lamar County cemetery sites
and I agree, they are probably in an unmarked grave.
I suspect, although I can't prove it as of yet, that due to the close living
proximity in which Stephen Smith lived with William "Big Bill" Pennington,
that he was hanged with him or in the aid of him as he was hanged by
renegades, for not taking a side during the war.
As I look at Lamar County, town of Vernon (taken from
rootsweb.com/~allamar) Stephens property crossed the road along the east
side of Lebanon Church, stopping just north of the church at Watson's creek.
From there it ran South in a square *_l l N

Now imagine that Lebanon Church is where the asterisk is, th road from town
crosses < and > (This isn't much of a map, but its a quick and hopefully
easy to read drawing)
You menitoned Furnace Hill; the end of the old Smith place is closer to
Sprinfield Church. Matter of fact, its due south on their easternmost
property line, about where the @ is.
The maps I see now show gravel pitts on their property.
So see without graves, other researching or living relatives, I believe my
last resort is the deee records and or probate judge. Problem isthey can't
give me any info unless I know the page number the deed(s) are on. Oh I know
the numbers, description, how much was paid, etc. I don't have the page. Any
suggestions are welcome.
Mike
