Gabriel Smith, 56th New York Volunteer Infantry, Tenth Legion, 1861.
The 1861 state volunteer jacket, of dark blue trimmed with bright blue
on the collar and shoulder starps is further decorated with the
distinctive shield and roman numeral "X" , denoting the"Tenth Legion"
designation of the 56th Regiment. Photograph from the Michael J. McAfee
