Photo is attached. Here goes....Jacob Oliver Smith was born in Riley Township, Butler County, Ohio in 1868 to John Smith and Cornelia Maria VanAusdall. I can give a fairly complete history on her. His is very sketchy. Here is what I know about him and the situation.
We have found no proof of a marriage. In that day and time if a child was illegitimate they put bastard on school records, birth records and etc. We have found nothing of this sort. The VanAusdall's were a fairly well to do family and there is evidence he was not poor.
She married William Doan in 1870. She didn't raise Jacob, her parents did. John sent money monthly for Jacob's up keep. We don't know if he visited Jacob much. We do know that Jacob knew who his father was and so did others.
We have a letter dated 10-1-1900 from Jacob's 16 year old 1/2 sister. In it she states "your father, Mr. John Smith" visited the other day. "There was romance in the air" between John and Maria. "He said he was widowed and had two sons and a daughter". Maria lived in Hamilton, Ohio at the time.
Jacob's daughter is now 80+ years old. She owns the picture. She was simply told this was her grandfather. The only info she has is the above mentioned. She wants to find this side of her family before she dies. There is no proof John was from Ohio. We don't know if he lived close by or was passing through or what the situation was at the time.
If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know.
