My oldest Smith is Josephus D. Smith born Dec. 12, 1800 in New Haven County,
Connecticut. That information is from his obituary. He died December 1889 in
Madison County, Idaho.

He moved to Geauga County, Ohio in the early 1820s and married Laura Conant
there in 1824. They had five known children. He moved to Linn Co., Iowa about
1849 and in 1852, at the age of 52, he made a trip via ox team to the gold
fields of California. His home was lost in an tornado in 1860 and he moved to
Madison County Iowa about 1866.

I think his parents are Justus Smith and Eunice Matthews of New Haven
Connecticut because they had a son named Josephus who was born to them in December
1800.
