Paula,
Here is what I have on my bunch in Defiance County, Ohio:

John, age 4, born Ohio

Elizabeth, wife, age 56, born August 1853 in Ohio
S. John, son, 23, June 1876, born Ohio
J. Peter, son, 21, born December 1879
(?) Joseph, 19, born March 1881

J. WILLIAM, age 10, born March 1890
N. Maggie,age 6, born April 1894

1910 Defiance County, Ohio, Ward-2 (think the enumerator really screwed up here!)

1920 Washington County, MS census, Greenville, MS District 150

303 South Walnut Street,

William L. Smith, age 30, born Ohio, Father born "Germany", mother born "England" speaks "German", flagman for Columbia and Greenville Railroad. This is the "Leonard" from the 1910 Defiance County, Ohio census. I believe this man is my grandfather, "Willie" Smith, born 1890 who died March 26, 1930 in Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi. He is said to have spoken various "foreign languages fluently" (probably German, possibly French).

I am hoping someone on this list can find death records, marriage records, estate records, etc..on this family in Defiance County, Ohio.

Thanks again,

Lon, This is along shot, but my gg-grandfather was a Peter Smith (Schmidt) and according to alot of census records he was also born in Belgium. I do not have proof of his family, but I know that my g-grandfather (John Smith) was born in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY in 1862. I have found a family in the 1850 census there and Elizabeth Schmidt is the head of family, she is 52 yrs. old, and has sons Nicholas age 18, Peter age 16, Francis age 13, John age 8, and Michael age 6. The census says they were born in Germany, except for John and Michael in NY, but it makes me wonder if the enumerator put the right place of birth for John.

In the 1860 Census for Buffalo, Erie Co., NY, there is a Francis Smith Ward 5, Peter Smith Ward 5 and a Nicholas Smith Ward 3 all born in Belgium. Francis b. 1835, Peter b. 1832, & Nicholas b. 1830. There is also an Elizabeth Schmidt in Ward 5, age 66, b. 1793 Belgium. I believe these to be the same people as in the 1860 census. I coudn't find John or Michael though.

My Peter Smith family moved to Bradford Pa. when I again find him in the 1880 census. The Nicholas Smith family was in Titusville, PA. in the 1870 census.

I have contributed my brothers Smith DNA to the New England states Smith DNA project, which includes New York. So just wanted to let you know that there is a Peter Smith/Schmidt family listed there that was suppose to also be born in Belgium.

Subject: John "Smith" (Schmidt?) family - Defiance, Ohio 1880, 1900, etc..

I believe I may have found my ancestors. I would like to have information on the John "Smith" family in Defiance County, Ohio in 1880, and 1900.

In 1880, Defiance County, Ohio page 75B

"John" Smith, male 38, born "Belgium", works for Railroad
Elizabeth, wife, 27, born Ohio, father born "France", mother born "France"
John, son, age 4 born Ohio
Peter J., son, less than six months, born Ohio

In 1900, Defiance County, Ohio district 9

(illegible) Smith - male, born December 1844 "Germany"
Elizabeth, wife, born August 1853 Ohio
S. John, son, born June 1876 Ohio age 23
J. Peter, son, born December 1879 age 21
?.Joseph, son, born March 1881, age 19
K. Josephine, born March 1884, age 16
A. Catherine, born May 1888, age 13
J. William, born March 1890, age 10
?. Maggie, born April or Aug. 1894, age 6

I suspect the above "J. William" is William L. Smith, born 1890 Ohio, father born "Germany", who was working for the Columbia and Greenville railroad in Greenville, MS in 1920. This man could have been my grandfather, and would have been run out of the Greenville area by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

This may explain why I haven't been able to find a close DNA match via the "Southern Smiths DNA project". Hopefully, I may be able to trace down a descendant of John, Peter or Joseph and get them to participate in the testing.

Any help on these folks would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Willie Smith
