I also have a brick wall on a John Smith. My John Smith was born in VA, but married a woman from TN named Mary Murphy. They had a son named John F. Smith b. abt 1855 in TN. He ended up in KY by 1880.
Story is the son may have been indian as his daughter, now deceased, mentioned he could not talk proper. And she definetly looked and laughed indian. She only knew him for about 3 or 4 years and then he disappeared. Story also said he changed his name.
Supposedly he died in 1900, but found nothing. And nothing on his parents. Been stuck for years.
