I have been trying to find anything about my GGrandfather for quite some time now. All I have is his wife was Laura (maiden name unknown) and that he was the Chief of Police in Columbia, PA. All of my older relatives said that he came from Germany and before he was a police officer the 1920 cen. says that he was and ironworker.
So my thoughts were that if he came from Germany and was an ironsmith, they dropped the iron and gave him the name Smith.
Any info would be great.
