"I have a James Smith who was born in Rowan Co. NC in 27 Feb 1770
- died 7 Sept 1839 ... James and John were the sons of Major: James Smith and Clara/Chloe Smith Sr.
"If you have living male Smith descendents of you line it might help you if
you can get them to do a DNA test. If so don't get less than 37 markers
done, If you haven't see the Northeastern Smith DNA Project, web-site you
will see what I mean. Gloria Padach Laguna Beach, CA"

Absolutely! There is no substitute for DNA when you are tracing SMITHs!!! And, yes, 37 is the practical lower limit. I tested 23/25 with another SMITH man- not promising at all for indicating a close connection. With a 37 marker upgrade, we showed a 35/37 match , and, with a 67 marker upgrade, 65/67. 35/37 indcates a close connection and 65/67 abolutely points to a very close connection.
Turned out that the great great SMITH grandparents of this testor and mine were very close neighbors in 1830 Knox Co., TN and definitely of the same SMITH family!
