Hi Bev,
Thanks for the message. I was tired last night and didn't get round to
answering all my mail - behind on my correspondences in general.

Sorry to say my EVANSes are all Welsh - well, not quite correct, my
grandmother married John Richard EVANS, a native of Holywell in Flintshire,
North Wales, and she was from Wolverhampton. My grandmother was a HIPKISS
and following the deaths of her parents went to live, eventually, with a
maiden aunt in Holywell. They were Catholics and ran a small shop that used
to be oppoiste the Catholic church in that town. I remember the shop, think
its gone now, but the church is still there.

John Richard served in France during the War but had originally been in the
Royal Welsh Fusiliers, as were most of the men from Flintshire. Somehow he
was transferred to the South Wales Borderers and ending up in France instead
of Gallipoli. There he was gassed and spent the rest of the War as an
instructor.

We still have connections with Wolverhampton and relatives there. My last
visit was to see my Auntie Mary TENNANT before her death. She was the
daughter of my grandmother's sister and Bill PAULTON. Two HIPKISS sisters
married two PAULTON brothers and these two were nephews of Harry PAULTON,
the quite famous comedian and playwright.

However, there is no EVANS in my family linked to Wolverhampton before the
marriage of Teresa HIPKISS and John Richard EVANS. I knew my grandmother
but never met my grandfather because he died six years before I was born.
However, I knew his sister Sally HAYES nee EVANS and she was a mine of
information and photographs. What I know about the EVANS family comes
mainly from here.

Best wishes,
Charles

Hi Charles

You mention your EVANS line.

I have attached a file with our Evans family in Wolverhampton.

Any connection?

Mary Evans came to Australia shortly after the 1851 census as she was
married in Melbourne in August 1852. Mary was my 3x great grandmother. Do
not know if any of the others came here also.
