Everyone has their favourite software: it's the one they use and the
one they'd recommend for that reason.

The best advise is to try out as many different genealogy software
programs as you can to see which one you feel most comfortable with.
All them come with either a free version or a free 30 day trial.

http://www.genopro.com/
http://www.bkwin.org/ (Brothers Keeper)
http://www.familysearch.org (PAF)

These will give you a start. If you google "Genealogy programs"
*with* the quotes, you'll find a number of others.

FWIW, I've used both PAF and Legacy but I much prefer Legacy to the
extent that I upgraded from the free version to the deluxe. I found
PAF very clumpy and awkward to use. Legacy is very user friendly and
intuitive. Even if you mess something up, it isn't the end of the
earth and is usually easy to rectify.
