This looks as if it could be him in the 1901 census of Wednesbury:

RG13/2728, folio 29, page 1
7 Darlaston Road

John THOMPSON Boarder Widr 68 Bricklayer
Staffs Sedgley

He is boarding in the household of Walter BINTON, 66, Coal Miner.
Interestingly on the same page living at 2 Darlaston Road is a Joseph
THOMPSON, 30, Bricklayer, born Wednesbury, his wife Ada and son Joseph, aged
2.
