Subject: [UK-Burbage] 1851 Census of Wiltshire
I know this is a bit of a cheek and not what this mail-group is for but I'm
selling my set of 1851 Census CDs of Wiltshire. I intend to put them up on
eBay next week but if anyone wants them for £8 + p&p 60p (UK only I'm
afraid) then let me know. I believe the current retail price is £14 plus
postage.
What are these CDs? It is a set of 4 put together by Gordon Beavington of
Canada. The transcripts seem to have been published in a few other of his
collections but this one has the major benefit of containing scanned images
of the actual census reports as well as his transcripts and indices. As far
as I can tell they contain every parish (and extra-parochial area) in the
county including Bedwyn and surrounding area (which is often grouped with
Hungerford, Berkshire. Of note is that while there are only the transcripts
of the Wiltshire parishes - Aldbourne Ramsbury, G Bedwyn etc, the CD also
contains the census images of the Berkshire parishes like Hungerford,
Inkpen, Kintbury, Lambourne)
Those who have used these transcripts will be aware of their limitations.
When I compared his of Burbage with mine (done from A3 photocopies of the
census returns I bought some years ago) there are a considerable number of
differences. I can only assume his was a one-off transcription exercise
without any proof reading as some of the errors / omissions are glaring.
However with the benefit of the actual census returns on the CD you do not
have to rely purely on the transcripts but can spent many happy hours in
the comfort of your own home wading through the images as if you were in
the Records Office - what better way to spend Christmas!
Full details of the product can be found at

I shall not be checking my email again until Monday so if more than one has
replied I'll put the names into a hat and let Frankie (the office cat)
choose.
BTW. To be fair, if your interest if only in the Burbage census of 1851
then save your money as I shall be putting my transcript up on my web site
in the next couple of weeks.
Regards
Colin
