Hello everyone,
I am posting this to 3 appropriate lists, so if you see it more than
once, please excuse the extra posts.
According to a family story, my great-grandmother was born in
Hamilton, Ontario. She was orphaned at an early age and grew up in an
adoptive/foster home in upstate New York. I have been able to learn the
names of two of her siblings, but not her parents. I don't know whether the
parents died in New York or in Ontario, although I'm guessing the former.
I have found no records for the parents in either country. I have
found no Ontario records to provide evidence of the existence of either the
children or the parents there, although some later records give Ontario as
the birthplace of the children. And then there's that family story again...
What I do know is the names of the 3 siblings (there may have been
more), their approximate dates of birth, the fact that all ended up in
upstate New York by a young age. Only the family story mentions Hamilton as
the specific birthplace; official records, at most, say Ontario.
Here's what I do know about the siblings' early details:
John GIBLIN, born ca. 1838 in Ontario (died 1889 in Michigan). By
the 1860 U.S. census, he is in Wayne County, New York.
Nellie GIBLIN, born probably 24 December 1841 in Ontario (died 1892
in Michigan). By the 1860 U.S. census, she is in Wyoming County, New York.
Kittie/Katherine GIBLIN, born 1847/48, probably in Hamilton, Ontario
(died 1880 in Florida). By the 1860 U.S. census she was in Seneca County,
New York.
A "younger sister" of Kittie, who died young of typhoid. This is
from the label of an old photo in which she looks like she's about 12-14
years old. No further info.
I have not been able to locate them in the 1850 U.S. census which
leads me to believe they were still in Ontario at that point.
Could someone recommend how I could get a check of the 1841 and 1851
Ontario census? I'm hoping it will give me their parents' names and origins
and possibly list other family members.
Also I am hoping for suggestions as to what other records or
resources to check to find them in Ontario. I have searched all the on-line
records I could locate. Unfortunately, I do not have access to
Ancestry.com, and I am out in the country without easy access to an LDS
library. Any suggestions and help as to how to proceed would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you for your help.
Juliann
