Thanks again Cliff, births of two sons of Shadrick and
Clara were noted in the Pickering News in 1922 and
1929, just "a son to .... " there were at least
another 8 children, some between those two births, the
last in 1935/36 twins, baby girl stillborn, her
brother is the only one of all those siblings still
alive. He doesn't know when his Dad died as Shadrick
left the home after his wife died. Guess I need to get
to Toronto and get some research done...especially on
the dreaded 2nd Heir Case Files stuff on Thomas
Stephenson.

Marlene,
Newspapers did indeed have obituary columns going back
into the 1800's that I'm aware of. In the 1870's for
example most were small entries giving the name, date
and location, often in a combined column of Births and
Deaths (Marriages were separate and more detailed);
however, if the person had some social standing then
the obituary was often a larger article in the main
body of the newspaper. The Ottawa Journal and many
other newspapers did not include the deceased in the
Obituary column if he/she had an article in the main
body of the newspaper. This makes for very slow
research. < Snipped > ...........
