I would term it as being a form of enterophthisis (or form of
gastrointestinal infection in the bowels) causing a supperation in the bowels (infection)
which could be an abscess. If such then the infection could spread through the
body causing damage to the nervous system.
I would imagine that it would have been difficult to determine the actual
cause in the olden days for something of this nature and thus the cause of death
could have been various. Treatment would have been limited at that time. The
actual cause of death might of even been a form of bowel cancer. But there
is no doubt in my mind that it would have been a slow and painful death.
