According to

consumption is "A wasting away of the body"

It also says to see marasmus and when you check that you
see "Malnutrition occurring in infants and young children,
caused by an insufficient intake of calories or protein"

So I think you could safely say that consumption of the
bowels was wasting away of the bowels - perhaps cancer, or
perhaps this malnutrition in infants (depending on the age
of the deceased)
