Hello Kirsten,
Sorry that I can't offer too much. In my case, the marriage bond came
last. The marriage record was found in library indexes of the Cobourg
Star, a very old weekly newspaper. It contained no family information
except birthplace. I found the actual record by browsing the film of the
parish record of St Peter's Church in Cobourg. That film contains BMD's
on many of my family branches but the Thackeray branch was a surprise
since we had a Methodist Church and Cemetery right on our farm in
Alnwick. Unless you are able to find a baptism you are unlikely to find
parents' names. Most marriage records of that era only mentioned
witnesses. In any case, have you looked at various books such as
"Marriage Notices of Ontario 1813-1854 by Reid", "Ontario Marriage
Notices 1830-1856 by Wilson", the various "Methodist Papers" and many
others that are available in most libraries?

Hello Bill:

Many thanks for your response. Yes, it's of tremendous help--and also very
encouraging. But may I impose and ask a few more questions?

I assume you found the record of the marriage bond first. Exactly how did
you get from there to the proper church record? Did you order and search
films for all the churches in the area, or is there a smarter way? Next,
did the church record give any additional information over the bond? In my
case, I'm looking for names of parents of the married couple and the bond
gives no clues.

Thanks again for your help.

Kirsten

Hello Kirsten,
This information may be of some help to you. My third great grandparents
William Thackeray & Margaret Brown were issued a Marriage Bond in
Cobourg Ontario Feb 19, 1834 and were married in Cobourg on Feb 22, 1834
by A. N. Bethune who was later the Bishop of Toronto. Their marriage was
recorded in the register of St Peter's Church of England. They were both
adherents of the Church of England but chose to be married by license
instead of banns. Possessors of a marriage bond could be married by
Minister or JP. In my case, the marriage was found in a church register
and also in a newspaper article.

I should have known better than to post a query to the Upper Canada list on
July 1. There was just one response, and that left a portion of my
question unanswered, so I'll try again . . .

I know that a marriage bond is simply a guarantee that the parties are
unencumbered by prior spouses, it's not a record of the marriage itself.
When a bond exists, specifically Wentworth County in 1832, would that
necessarily preclude marriage by a minister? Would it indicate that the
couple were married by a Justice of the Peace? And if by a JP, where might
the actual marriage record be?

Kirsten
