Subject: [UPPER-CANADA] Justice of the Peace

Does anyone know whether a Justice of the Peace ca 1811 would have conducted
business at a "home base," or whether he would have traveled around a given
district?

I have a record of a marriage performed in 1811 by Robert Nelles, J. P. for
the Gore District. It appears that Nelles lived in Grimsby at that time and
for many years afterward. I'm wondering if couples he married would likely
have lived in the Grimsby area, or if they would have traveled some distance
to his place of business, or if Nelles perhaps traveled around the district
and could have married couples at any location in the area.

Certainly there's nothing carved in stone, but a general guess would at
least give me a place to begin looking for origins of the couple in
question. Thanks for any thoughts.

Kirsten
