James,
My records show that Charles married Margaret Brooks
on 15 Jul 1856 in Lincoln Co., NC and that Thomas
Jefferson Yelton was born about 1862.

Then he married Martha E. ?? about 1879. My notes say
there were no children from this marriage. So, I'm not sure
where Zachariah West comes into the picture. If Martha
was married to Zachariah in 1861 and did not marry Charles
until 1876-1879 any child she may have had would have
been grown or nearly so before she married Charles.
Since the marriage date to Charles is so late I would
wonder why - if Thomas was not Charles' child - he would
take the Yelton name.

Have you looked at the 1870 and 1880 Census records?
That might help as the 1870 would show if Thomas was
living with Charles and Margaret. If so, I would conclude
that Thomas was their child. The 1880 Census should
show Charles and Martha E. and Thomas and any other
children living in the household.

Martha, do you have any more information on this family?
Or any other suggestions of where to look for verification?
I wish I could be of more help.

Happy Holidays and happy hunting.

Iris
