Peter, still struggling with email access at present. Just a thought worth considering with your MOTTERSHEAD enquiry. It is possible that John MOTTERSHEAD is the father of the 5 illegitimate children of Jane, i.e. born after the death of Jane's first husband Thomas YOXALL. Jane was housekeeper to him and living with him and her children on the 1871 census.

The full name of Moses YOXALL, b.c. 1884 is Moses M. YOXALL. Could the M. be for MOTTERSHEAD? I have yet to find a marriage or a death for Moses, so perhaps the family suspicion that John MOTTERSHEAD was the father of these 5 children is well founded.

I would also add that Jane’s son Ernest YOXALL, b.c 1877, is actually Ernest M. YOXALL, perhaps the M. again meaning MOTTERSHEAD. To complicate matters further, I believe Ernest married Eliza MOTTERSHEAD in Sep Qtr 1898, District of Stockport, Cheshire!

Perhaps a way forward is for your researcher to purchase a few certificates to prove the parents of the various MOTTERSHEAD in question. Unfortunately, like Joan, I haven’t researched the MOTTERSHEAD line sufficiently to link these lines. I can however confirm that Thomas YOXALL only married once, in 1860 at St Bartholomew, Wilmslow, Cheshire, to Jane BRADLEY and that Thomas was recorded as a Bachelor and Jane a Spinster.

Regards

Jim

Jane,
ollowing all messages so far - I think.
I don't have any children for Thomas and Emily, as you say the 4 you had
ere Jane's possibly illegitimate. Sounds a bit like a Grace Byford I had ,
he had 11 children between 1852 and 1870. Husband , William Byford, died in
861 - this didn't seem to stop the baby production - I wonder how many were
is before he died!

Hello Joan,

I've just read your e-mail - sorry I sent mine before I'd seen it.

You have really helped regarding advising that Thomas died in 1871, and
confirming that Martha and Clara are Jane's children. Obviously he
couldn't be the father of any children born after 1871, so I'll have to
look into that further. I also didn't know that Jane married Matthew
Bailey so that is a big help too - I did see her listed as a lodger with
the Baileys, but obviously didn't notice that she was a Widow then.

Thanks again for the information.

Regards,
Janet

Peter, although I do not have the complete details of the marriage of
Lily
YOXALL and Harold MOTTERSHEAD, they were married at St. Mary's Church,
Weaverham. I would therefore suggest that this particular Lily YOXALL
was
the daughter of James YOXALL and Mary Ann SHALLCROSS. James and Mary
Ann
were married at St. Mary's, Weaverham and Lily was also baptised there.
As
far as I can tell the YOXALL's in Weaverham stemmed from the above James
YOXALL and William YOXALL, both sons of James YOXALL and Frances/Fanny
HIGGINS.

Regarding Jane BRADLEY. Jane was a Spinster when she married Thomas
YOXALL
in 1860, she was not previously married. Jane and Thomas had several
children between 1861 and 1869, i.e. Hannah, Elizabeth, William, Fanny,
and
Thomas.

Jane's husband, Thomas, died in 1871. However, Jane went on to have
more
children between the years 1873 and 1884, i.e. Martha, John Thomas,
Ernest,
Clara Fair, and Moses. They were given the surname YOXALL but obviously
they are not the children of Thomas YOXALL !!

Jane does not appear to have remarried until 1892 when she married
Matthew
BAILEY. She is shown as a Widow on both the 1881 and 1891 censuses.
On
the 1881 she is a boarder with a family named MOTTERSHEAD, and on the
1891
she is a Lodger with Matthew BAILEY.

I haven't looked into any MOTTERSHEAD family history so am unable to say
whether there is any connection between the MOTTERSHEAD who married Lily
and
the one who married Ernest.

Hope this helps.

Cheers............Joan
